Look What $7 a month can do!
According to adherants.com about 159 million people in the United States consider themselves Christians. If 159 million people would give $7 a month, that would generate 13.3 billion dollars a year, enough to do all of the following:*
For $780 million we could provide education and basic health care for 2 million children. Education is a key factor in reducing extreme poverty.
For $50 million we could drill thousand of wells serving millions of people. If you get thirsty, you can go to your kitchen sink, turn on the faucet, and get some water to drink. This is a luxury that hundreds of millions of people don’t have. Every year millions of people die from lack of safe drinking water. And while some programs, like children’s education, require a yearly investment, well drilling is a one-time cost that will have benefits for years to come. Fresh water helps in ways you may not have considered. A person lying in bed with a water-borne illness can do no work, hindering that family and the entire local economy. Also, once a community has a well, the hours spent walking miles to get potable water can be used to educate children or work in the field.
Micro-enterprise loans enable women to start businesses to feed their families. I met a woman in Chennai, India who had purchased a mixer, sugar, fruit and jars with her loan of less than $100. The money she now makes from selling her jam not only provides for her family but serves her community with an affordable, locally produced food product. And as she spends the money she makes, the entire economy of her area benefits. This woman was one of 10,000 women in this part of India who have received loans.
For $200 million, we could change the lives another 2 million families by proving a business start-up loan. This is an especially strategic opportunity because well run micro-enterprise loans programs have an astonishing payback rate of over 90%, which makes the money available again to help yet another family.
The programs mentioned so far, education, micro-loans and well drilling, have used barely over one billion of our 13 billion dollars.
A pair of goats not only provides much needed milk, but also meat and income from offspring. This is another one-time investment that will provide many years of benefits. Some programs even require that the first set of offspring be given to another family in need, thus multiplying the program. For $300 million we can give 2 million families a pair of goats.
For the education, loan, drilling and goat programs mentioned so far, we still have spent only 10% of our 13 billion dollars.
James 1:27 says that true religion is to help widows and orphans in their distress. Millions of orphaned children walk the streets of the world’s major cities, falling victim to sexual abuse, drug pushers, and hunger. For 1.8 billion dollars we can provide loving homes for 2 million of these orphans.
Tens of thousands of children die each year from lack of a malaria bed net which costs only a few dollars. We can provide 5 million children with nets for about $50 million.
For education, loans, water, goats, orphan care, and malaria nets we still have spent only 3.15 billion of our 13 billion dollars.
With the rest we can:
- Provide millions of people with emergency food in drought stricken or war torn areas.
- Provide millions of people with survival packs after natural disasters.
- Provide millions of children with immunization from deadly diseases.
- Free thousands of children from sex-trafficking and bonded labor.
- Train and supply thousands of mid-wives for areas with very high infant mortality rates.
- Provide thousands of children with prosthetic limbs.
- Provide thousands of emergency flights for children with life threatening illness.
- And much more.
What can $7 do? More than you ever imagined. There are currently about 27,000 Christian service organizations and they all have one thing in common--they could do more if they had more resources.
The largest of these organizations include:
A. World Vision USA 2006 revenue: $946 million
B. Food for the Poor 2006 revenue: $854million
C. Feed the Children 2006 revenue: $665 million
D. Samaritan's Purse 2006 revenue: $276 million
E. Compassion Int. 2006 revenue: $257 million
Imagine the impact an additional $13 billion dollars would have if made available to the best of the thousands of Christian organizations who are showing the love of Christ to the world’s suffering.
As the Mustard Seed Solution researches and distributes funds to organizations, you will have the opportunity to recommend your favorite organization. We will research groups that are recommended, and if they meet the criteria of doing effective and efficient work among the poor in Jesus name, we may begin supporting their work. Your $7 a month could result in your favorite organization receiving hundreds or even thousands of dollars in monthly gifts.
Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problems.” Let’s begin to close the gap between what we do, and what we are capable of doing, and as a result, meet the needs of thousands.
