Much of the suffering caused by extreme poverty in the world could be prevented by providing more resources to the thousands of people who are sacrificing their own comfort to serve the poor. With more resources they could provide more malaria bed nets, more fresh water wells, more medicine, more staff, more emergency feeding centers, more training in agriculture, more micro-loans, more schools, more orphanages, and the list could go on.
The name “Mustard Seed Solution” comes from the parable in Mark 4:30-32, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.”
Just as the mustard seed is a small seed, $7 a month is a small amount of money. And just as the mustard seed becomes a very large garden plant, every Christian in the US giving $7 a month would create the largest ongoing Christian relief effort in history. And while we have no illusions of reaching such grandeur, we are passionate about showing the love of Christ in tangible ways to as many suffering people as possible.
Changing the world would not even require that much sacrifice. We can trade a few minutes of pleasure from a cup of coffee or a soft drink for the eternal pleasure of saving the lives of those God loves. It would be a wise investment. “Sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven…” (Matthew 19:21, emphasis mine).
